Hey Hey!! We woke up this morning to snow on the ground! It is really pretty and exciting. What a great way to start the day. That is until you realize you still have to do everything you usually do, just in the snow. On top of that, we have some responsibilities here when it comes to snow. They don’t close down Germany for snow like they do in the south.

The kids still had to walk to the bus stop. They were hoping for a cancellation, but “This isn’t the south.” BenTen explained. One day they will be telling these stories to their kids, “We had to walk a mile each way, uphill, in the snow!” It’ll be true, how cool is that? Unless of course they hitched a ride from our amazing neighbors. I’ll have to ask them to tell the kids no one morning just so they have the story to tell when they are older.
Brad still had to drive into work. I still have to walk to the train station to go to an appointment later today. Abby still needs to go out and use the bathroom……but for now she’s decided to hold it. She’s a bit prissy for a dog. Cold snow causes her to have anxiety attacks. (there are many things that cause her to have anxiety attacks) She headed toward the door, but as soon as the cold air hit her, she backed up into the warmth and safety of the living room. I guess she will wait until she really REALLY has to go. Currently she is curled up, recovering from the chill of ALMOST going outside. #SoClose

Here in Germany they take holding people responsible very seriously. Rules are also taken very seriously here. They expect you to clear your bit of the sidewalk of slippery snow by a certain time in the morning. Should you not, and someone falls on your section of the sidewalk, you are held responsible for their injuries. In fact, they may still hold you responsible even if you do clean it. I decided to clean it.

I must confess that while we knew snow was in the forecast, we weren’t as prepared as we should be. Many people here have said that the snow never really sticks and never accumulates. The snow we have gotten up until this has proven this true. The previous snows have been really pretty to watch come down. It has even looked really heavy at times, but nothing ever accumulated.
That being said, I swept the snow away today with a push broom. It actually worked really well though. I was able to “scrub” some of the tough spots, and it wasn’t as noisy as a shovel. I also salted the side walk with some coarse salt from the kitchen. We are adding snow shovel and salt to our shopping list and making it an urgent to do item. It is forecasted to snow for three days. We should get a break this weekend and then it’s predicted to snow again two days next week.
This southern girl is definitely out of her comfort zone. It is really pretty. I figured I’d share. I keep thinking, its not even Winter yet!
